Electronic engine
immobilizers offer the best protection against vehicle theft.
When an immobilizer is
installed, your car starts only with your key or your special code. When
someone tries to start your car without your key or code, the immobilizer
cuts power to the starter, ignition and fuel supply.

proofing program
Save $180 immediately
when you install an immobilizer through our convenient new incentive
program.
Approved
immobilizers
If you are installing
an electronic immobilizer, we recommend you buy an approved one --
one that meets the
Canadian Theft Deterrent Standard. Not all immobilizer systems are
equally effective.
The following
immobilizers have undergone extensive testing and have been proven to meet
the Canadian Theft Deterrent Standard:
The Insurance Bureau of Canada explains the elements necessary for an
immobilizer system to meet the standard.

Immobilizers at no cost for Most at
Risk Vehicles
Until February 28, 2007,
Manitoba Public Insurance is offering Standard Immobilizer Installations
at no cost for Most at Risk Vehicles registered in
Manitoba. When the installation is completed, you’ll also save $40 on your
basic Autopac policy each year.
Here’s how it
works:
- Your vehicle must
qualify as a
Most at Risk Vehicle.
- We pay up to $280 for
the purchase and standard installation of an approved immobilizer meeting
the Canadian Theft Deterrent Standard.
- In most cases, our
$280 contribution will cover the entire cost. If your installation
involves any additional costs for special circumstances such as a remote
starter, you can finance the cost interest-free for up to five years.
- You get a $40 discount
off your Autopac premium as soon as the installation is completed. And
you’ll keep getting that $40 discount for years to come.
- The installation must
be completed by February 28, 2007.
Is your vehicle one of the Most at
Risk?
Standard immobilizer
installations are being offered at no cost only to Most at Risk Vehicles
because these are the vehicles consistently targeted by auto thieves. They
make up 10 per cent of Manitoba vehicles yet account for 62 per cent of
theft claim costs in the province. For some, the odds of being stolen are as
high as 1 in 8 in Winnipeg. Until these vehicles are protected, theft rates
will continue to climb.
Check the
Most at Risk List. If your vehicle is on it, you should definitely
participate in this theft-proofing program.
What if your vehicle
qualifies for an approved immobilizer at no cost and you had one installed
before this offer came into effect? We’ll reward your responsible actions by
refunding the $140 you paid for the immobilizer. If you chose financing, a
credit will be applied to your account.
Eligibility
- The incentive program is
available to passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks insured through
Basic Autopac.
- The immobilizer must
meet the Canadian Theft Deterrent Standard of the Insurance Bureau of
Canada.
- The unit must be
installed by an accredited technician.
- As a reward for being
proactive, Manitoba Public Insurance will also provide the $140 rebate to
any eligible vehicle owner who had an aftermarket IBC-approved immobilizer
installed before June 24, 2005. The corporation will automatically provide
the rebate and refund interest costs to the 2,660 participants in the
previous incentive program. Others may obtain the rebate by providing
proof of the installation to Manitoba Public Insurance.
Financing
- The customer’s cost
($140 for a standard installation, plus any additional costs for special
circumstances such as remote starters) can be financed through Manitoba
Public Insurance at 0 per cent interest for a term of up to five years.
- Payments are made over
12, 24, 36, 48 or 60 months. When financed over 60 months, the monthly
withdrawal is less than $3.
- Monthly payments can be
made by way of pre-authorized withdrawals from bank accounts or automatic
monthly charges to MasterCard or Visa.
- If the customer is
currently financing an immobilizer through Manitoba Public Insurance, the
interest rate will be retroactively dropped to zero and previous interest
costs will be credited to the principal.
- Approval for financing
is handled during your first phone call. An appointment with an installer
will be booked during the same phone call, at a time most convenient to
the customer.
Annual Premium Discount
- Manitoba Public
Insurance will discount your Basic Autopac premium by $40 each year when
you have an approved aftermarket immobilizer installed by an accredited
facility.
- The discount increases
to $45 if you choose to purchase a $100, $200 or $300 optional deductible.
- In addition, you receive
a 50 per cent reduction on your $300 or $500 deductible on claims for
vehicles stolen with an anti-theft device properly in use and defeated.
- These discounts also
apply if you have an approved immobilizer installed as optional equipment
at the factory or dealership.
-
If you have a new vehicle with an immobilizer as
standard equipment, the discount has already been built into your
insurance premium.
